October Day Thirty One

“Jack…Jack come look at this…”  Donna called out as she held a notebook in her hands, tears spilled from her eyes.

Mom and Dad, by the time you read this I’m sure I will be long gone. Lily is packing for me while I write this.  Please always know that I love you very much.  I promise if I ever can, I will come back home to see you.  If I can’t I just want you to know this.  Today Lily told me to go with her sister, you know Lindsey, to walk with her through the Halloween thing, and that she would meet us there.  She didn’t meet us there, instead Mom she… she…… well, you’ll see it in the newspaper I’m sure tomorrow. I don’t have the time to write it all out, and I don’t think I could.   I promise Mom I didn’t do any of it, but Lily…  She did it for me.  She told me she loved me enough to make everything better for me.  I always thought if I was a good person, people would be good to me.  You taught me that, you and Dad.  I hate to tell you two this, but it’s a lie.  Becca and Candi weren’t real friends, I’ve never felt so hurt.  It was worse than Justin lying to me.  I’m sorry, Mom.  Tell everyone I’m so sorry.  I have to go now, it’s time to leave.  I love you both.  Lily says I’ll be taken care of.  She says she has the perfect place we can go together, Mom.  Goodbye Mom and Dad; I will miss you.

Jack looked up from the notebook to his wife before he choked back his want to cry.  “I’ll call the police.  Don’t worry, we’ll find her and see what in the world is going on.”

Donna nodded as she took back the notebook, watching Jack leave before she turned the page, staring as her heart dropped into her stomach at the words on the page.

~*~*~*~

“Lindsey…  We need to ask you a question about your sister.”  The police office by her bedside spoke as he looked over at her from the end of the hospital bed.

“My what?”

“Y-Your sister, Lily.  A girl by the name of April Philips stated in a letter her parents found in her room that your sister was the murderer and she may have possibly kidnapped the girl.”

Lindsey stared dumbfounded, and looked over at her parents.

“Lindsey is our only child…”  Her mother finally spoke for her, Lindsey nodded her head in agreement.

“…I’m sorry, I seem to be a bit confused.  The girl’s parents stated that their daughter spoke about a girl named Lily.  Spoke of her bringing her school work to her and that she told April that she would meet the two of you at the barn you kids were at.”

“No.  A teacher did that.  I invited the girl because I felt sorry for her and told her to meet me there.  I hoped if I included her she wouldn’t feel so rejected by those twats of friends she had.  I was hit over the head shortly after finding…”  She choked back tears before she shook her head.  “I was knocked out and I don’t remember anything until I woke up in the ambulance.”

“Did the parents SEE this girl??”  Lindsey’s father questioned sternly.

“Well, actually no.  They explained that their daughter spoke often and highly of the girl, but never got the chance to actually meet her face to face.”

“I am very sorry to not be of any help, and you can check our house, but we have no other child.”  The mother explained; the cop nodded his head.

“Before I go, I just want to make sure that the two of you stay here. Please, do not go home until I say otherwise.  I think it would be best for all three of your safety to just stay here until we can figure out exactly what is going on.”  He said with a curt nod before he left the room.
